Accident Reconstruction
The Dubuque County Sheriff’s office currently has 2 active accident investigators and 1 in training. Our investigators go through a minimum of 120 hours of specialized forensics training.
The main purpose of Accident Reconstruction is to determine how an accident occurred. Clues and evidence left on the roadway during the course of the accident are analyzed. Speed and other information relating to the accident is calculated using measurements and equations. Our investigators typically work backwards to determine what happened prior to and during the actual physical crash.
The main goals of Accident Reconstruction are:
- to determine all contributing factors that lead to the proximate cause of the accident
- accurately determine who is at fault for the accident
